Approach | Vision

My work doesn’t fit into the mold of typical research or documentary photography.

Straddling between fine art, landscape and traditional documentary/archival work – I come into this work hoping to create images from a rather different approach than most who work in the field of documentation photography, as I aim to capture not only what field work looks like for each scientist I hope to collaborate with, but also the more personal and emotive aspects of connection between scientists and their subjects.  This aspect is something that I believe the objective approaches of presenting facts and data purposely foregoes – yet something that is an important piece that helps to complete the puzzle of connecting the importance of scientific work with a broader public. I look to find ways to bridge that gap, “humanize data”, and to help to elevate the important and interesting work being done within the scientific community, that is happening now in the age of the Anthropocene.  This approach translates across projects – whether it is working in the field, the lab, macro photography or the grandeur of glaciers.

My fierce love of learning, coupled with collaboration helps to create a unique visual fingerprint for my clients that speaks to their work, endeavors to humanize data and highlights the hard work, discoveries and experiences in the field.  As a citizen scientist and artist I bring with me endless curiosity that translates beyond single images, to foster meaningful outcomes that extend far beyond phases of the project in which I am part.

I am a standing member of: National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), Society of Environmental Journalists, EcoArtSpace

Additionally, for projects located in the Arctic polar regions, I am conveniently located 15min from Stratton National Guard Base and the 109th Airlift Wing.

Project Planning & Coordination

Engage in thorough planning and coordination to ensure the success of the project. This involves liaising with scientists, researchers, and expedition leaders to understand project goals, objectives, and logistical requirements.

  • develop timeline for project photography
  • develop shot list of required shots for the project before project launch, adjusting during project
  • develop timeline, format for deliverables
  • coordinate public presentation opportunities
  • develop public presentations in coordination with collaborative partners
Photography - Research/Field - Visual Storytelling & Documentation

Capture high-quality (4k+, HR RAW), accurate, documentary/editorial images during the research or scientific expedition. This includes documenting the environment, scientific procedures, experiments, fieldwork, and other relevant activities. Images taken with the intention of:

  • public presentation of research through publications, conferences, lectures, exhibitions and project websites
  • in-house/personal documentation & project archive
  • grant applications for further funding opportunities

Focus on capturing images that convey a narrative, evoke emotions, and engage the audience, going beyond pure documentation.

Specimen Photography - Macro/Photo Stacking

Focus on capturing detailed close-up shots of specimens, plants, geology or equipment

  • provide documentation of collected specimens, or detailed images of specimens in the field, natural/found environment
  • provide documentation for project/institution archive purposes according to professional/institution/industry standards.
Editing & Post Production

Perform post-processing tasks such as editing, cropping, color correction, and image enhancement to ensure the photographs meet the desired quality standards.

  • images – high resolution color correction & editing to ensure accurate representation of project objectives
  • video – video editing, color correcting/toning, voice overs, music, documentation notes
Environmental | Landscape Photography

Depending on the nature of the project, capturing images of wildlife, landscapes, and natural phenomena encountered during the journey that help tell part of the story – or that would lend an artistic approach for exhibitions to help broaden awareness of the project.

  • wide shots, as well a detail images of ecosystems to help tell the full story of place within the broader realm of the project.
  • artistically composed shots that fit within the realm of fine art photography to help foster public exposure of the project,  bringing awareness of the project to a wide array of audiences.

  • graphic and text design elements and layouts
  • photographic slideshows, montages
  • web gallery design
  • Zoom and virtual meeting presentations, backgrounds
Project Web Design

Design and layout for project specific websites to share research within the scientific community as well as sites catered to sharing information with the general public.  Sites are built specifically for each project, tailored to the needs of the project and shareable information. Sites can include information on:

  • project findings – graphs, info-graphics, maps, animations, text, interactive graphics and elements
  • photos, videos
  • team profiles and information
  • discussion forums for Q & A and open communication/discussion
  • interactive project timelines
  • interactive story maps – before/after, story tracking
  • submission forms
Documentation | Archive | Data Management

Maintaining a photography archive and library of images from various research projects should be a vital part of recording project history and progress – for both institutions, and for individual scientist portfolios.  When working together, I provide the high-resolution, color-corrected images from our time together, for your photo library – including all meta-data, and named according to personal or institutional standards for inclusion in your photo archive.

Additional spreadsheets, Word doc or PDF will an in-depth image description can also be created as a table of contents for images from the session for easy reference when searching for images for use in presentations and various submissions.

Exhibition | Publication | Community Outreach

Coordination with exhibition, publication and community outreach opportunities.  Collaboration on creative ways of presenting images and documentation of projects to a wide variety of audiences, and ensuring that photo standards match those needed for high end publications.
